Europeans: why Von der Leyen became the “punching bag” of the right and far right

Rarely has the name of a foreign political leader been so targeted in an election campaign. The era of the Europeans has barely begun, and Ursula von der Leyen has already become the target of crossfire from all French forces on the right of the political spectrum. From LR to RN via Reconquête: the German President of the European Commission became the Turkish head of the right and extreme right during the reappointment campaign to the Berlaymont building in Brussels.

“She represents what the French hate about the EU: technocracy, bureaucracy, the lack of democracy associated with its desire to expand its powers beyond what the treaties give it,” explains the Reconquête strategist. At her first meeting, on March 10 in Paris, Marion Maréchal, who was distributing “No von der Leyen” leaflets at the Palais des Sports, blasted the European leader: “With her it’s not happiness in the meadow, it’s joy in the hijab.”
