Fillon case: The Court of Cassation will rule this Wednesday

A new stage in a seven-year-old case. This Wednesday, the Court of Cassation ruled on the appeals of former Prime Minister François Fillon, his wife and former deputy, convicted of fictitious work in the National Assembly.

The three defendants appealed the decision of the Paris Court of Appeal, which on May 9, 2022 sentenced former tenant Matignon to four years in prison, including one year, a fine of €375,000 and ten years of disqualification. .

Penélope Fillon was given a suspended two-year prison sentence, as well as a fine of €375,000, and Marc Joulot, François Fillon’s former deputy in Sarthe, was given a three-year suspended prison sentence, with disqualifications of two and five years respectively.

The defendants, who have always maintained their innocence, were also ordered to pay the National Assembly €800,000 in damages. In its decision, expected around 2 p.m., the Court of Cassation could write an epilogue to the case, seven years after the 2017 bombing of Penelopeita at the height of the presidential campaign in which François Fillon was the candidate of the right and center.

The High Court, which considers the rule of law rather than the merits of the case, may dismiss the appeals or grant a partial appeal, deciding the legal issue itself, as the Advocate General recommends. The decision of May 9, 2022 will become final and sentences suspended to date will take effect. But the Court of Cassation can also order a new trial.
