Single-parent families: Macron suggests “visiting” fathers

A new idea to help single mothers. Emmanuel Macron proposes in a video broadcast from Elle magazine on Tuesday evening to open a “debate” on establishing a possible “duty of visitation” for fathers in single-parent families, mainly an obligation for women.

“I want us to be able to open this discussion, which is, in essence, both a discussion about parenthood and a discussion about equality between women and men, which is to establish a duty of visitation, a duty of support until adulthood for children,” the president says in a short video posted by Elle on her Instagram account and X.

“When there is a father, he must fulfill all his responsibilities, and a mother, being in such a situation, can demand regular visits,” adds the Head of State, referring to the need, for example, for fathers to participate in parent-educational activities. meetings and are “participants” in the child’s education.

“Being a parent is a duty”

“Being a parent is a responsibility, and that responsibility does not end with divorce or separation,” and it is necessary for parents to “fulfill their responsibilities” as “two people,” he emphasizes.

He believes that “including for the child, it’s better this way. Because a child who never sees his father is a child who feels abandoned” and “whose emotional and educational development is not the same.”

Emmanuel Macron also gave an interview to the women’s weekly, which will hit newsstands on Wednesday.
