Legislature: Intelligence points to ‘possible disturbances of public order’ on election night, Darmanin says

Faced with the current political climate, authorities fear excesses. In an interview with CNews, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin spoke about the security threat during two legislative elections. “Intelligence notes speak of possible violations of public order on June 30 and, even more so, on July 7.”

“We have a lot of agitators in France,” he said, referring to the “threat” of radical Islamism, “the first threat to our country,” as well as the “far right” and “far left” who could “take advantage of these moments to try attack places of power or cause disturbances.”

“Police and gendarmes will be in large numbers”

“Often it’s very symbolic. This often happens in certain areas or certain cities that are known to be hotbeds of the far left or the far right,” he continued, without naming anyone by name.

“We are preparing for this, the police and gendarmes will be in large numbers,” assured Gérald Darmanin, specifying that he would hold a security meeting during the day on Wednesday on this matter. “It is not the street, not force, not blows that make democracy. These are French,” he insisted.

The day before, the Minister of the Interior had already said on the Europe 1 TV channel that “these slightly original elections” could “be the beginning of violence in the country.” “We can imagine that the ultra-left will react to the elections of the National Assembly, moreover, we are preparing for this,” he insisted.
