Mélenchon warns Taubira that a vote cannot be won “on a name”

Visiting the West Indies, Jean-Luc Mélenchon reserved an icy welcome at the entry of Christiane Taubira into the presidential campaign. “We do not win the elections on a name but on a program”, launched Saturday the candidate of rebellious France in a meeting in Martinique about the one who “plans” to apply for the Elysee in mid-January.

“In a democracy, there is no martingale to solve all the problems”, declared Jean-Luc Mélenchon in reference to the aura of prestige enjoyed by Christiane Taubira, addressing both Martinicans and voters of left in general, during its meeting near Fort-de-France, in front of a few hundred people. According to him, “we do not take the people by surprise three months before an election”.

Refusal of “the ritornello of union”

For the candidate for the Elysee, “we are not holding an open-air congress of the PS or the PRG (party of Christiane Taubira) but preparing to govern a power present on all continents”. “I am playing the ritornello of union, ah not to me,” cried the member of Bouches-du-Rhône. “Why was union possible before? Because that meant the triumph of common demands: retirement at 60, increasing the minimum wage, making Europe without defeating France, because we all agreed on that ”.

“But this union would no longer mean anything when those who were for retirement at 60 are content today with that at 62, the union would mean that we would put under wraps” the disagreements, estimated the ‘Insubordinate. “The union is the program, the program is the union”, he chanted, specifying: a “program of rupture”. Christiane Taubira is therefore still very far from succeeding in her bet to reunite her camp for 2022.
