Without Zlatan Ibrahimovic, coach Stefano Pioli put all his trust in Olivier Giroud to face the Derby della Madonnina. The French, world champion in 2018, took advantage of the last quarter of an hour of Inter vs. Milan to score a double and lift a 0-1 at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium.

The interistas, who defended the top of Serie A, had everything ready to extend the advantage over the escorts thanks to Ivan Perisic’s goal in the first stage. However, the ‘Rossoneros’ woke up in that final stretch to violate the rival’s last line and put themselves just one point behind.

It all started with a supportive Giroud. The attacker reached the center circle to steal the balloon from Alexis Sánchez. Immediately, Sandro Tonali advanced in the direction of the opposite goal and then opened on the side with Brahim Díaz. The Spaniard took a shot over the second post, but there was a deflection. Then, the Frenchman appeared throwing himself on the grass to push and make it 1-1.

Inspired by the goal, Milan went for more and advanced on Inter’s field. Theo Hernández, Ismael Bennacer, Brahim Díaz and Davide Calabria touched the balloon. The latter, filtered to the large area. Giroud controlled with the cue, turned and hit cross to make it 2-1.

Inter Milan vs. Milan: the previous

Inter takes the field with the presence of Argentine Lautaro Martínez and Chilean Alexis Sánchez, who joined the team after playing in the South American Qualifiers.

“I played many derbies and there are no favourites. Even less so in this Saturday’s derby, the episodes will decide the match and the motivations will be fundamental”, said Inzaghi, who ruled out Joaquín Correa due to injury.

On his side, Milan will not be able to count on Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Swedish striker continues with Achilles tendon problems. Thus, Pioli must bet on the Frenchman Olivier Giroud as the benchmark of the offense for the Derby della Madonnina.

“It is a difficult game. It’s a derby, a clash for the top places in the standings. That will give us confidence, strength”, said the coach of the ‘Rossoneros’ in reference to the importance of the game to boost his team.
