Copa Libertadores: the negative statistics of the Peruvian teams in the tournament

Cesar Vallejo became the first Peruvian team eliminated in this Libertadores Cup 2022. the poet ensemble lost the key to Olimpia of Paraguay 3-0 on aggregate. This result confirms a negative statistic for the League 1 clubs in this international tournament, which since 2010 have recorded more losses than wins.

Tournaments like the Copa Libertadores are a headache for Peruvian teams. It has also become a nightmare for the Cesar Vallejo that with the defeat against Olimpia added another edition without achieving a victory in this tournament.

“The intensity is different in the Libertadores. In Peruvian soccer, when we play games against each other, we don’t have this pace of play. Possession was ours, but with very little depth. Olimpia had little, but it hurt us ”, declared Jose William del Solarcoach of Cesar Vallejo.

In addition, Cesar Vallejo completed 570 minutes without scoring in the Copa Libertadores. The last time he celebrated a goal was in 2016 when he drew 1-1 against Sao Paulo in Trujillo. A real nightmare has been his international experience.

-BAD NUMBERS-

These poor results are not exclusive to Cesar Vallejo. Actually, they belong to all the Peruvian teams. To get an idea of how badly they have it, we should check when was the last time they qualified for the round of 16 of the Libertadores Cup.

Since the final played by Sporting Cristal in 1997, no other Peruvian team has been able to go further in the Copa Libertadores. Some stayed in the round of 16, but no one could advance like Garcilaso did. Throughout these years, only defeats and more defeats have been harvested.
