Russia’s attacks on Ukraine continue and have the whole world worried. In the midst of this, Schalke 04, the historic German club that currently plays in the Second Division, announced that it decided to remove the name and logo of GAZPROM, the Russian company that was its main sponsor, from its shirts.

“In view of the events, development and deterioration of the last few days, FC Schalke 04 decided to remove the GAZPROM name from their shirts.”, the club said in a statement on Thursday. The shirts will bear only the name Schalke 04 from the next game on Saturday in Karlsruhe.

Schalke 04 is a club with a long history in German football, several times champion in the 20th century, but currently fighting for promotion to the Bundesliga.

A little earlier this Thursday, Matthias Warnig, the CEO of the company operating the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which links Russia with Germany, resigned from the board of the miner’s club, after receiving sanctions from the United States.

The United States announced on Wednesday sanctions against ‘Nord Stream 2 AG’ and its main leaders, including Warnig, appointed in 2019 by Gazprom as the company’s representative in Schalke.

Following Moscow’s recognition of the independence of self-proclaimed pro-Russian “republics” in eastern Ukraine, Germany on Tuesday suspended the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project, which was not yet in service.
