FIFA suspends Russia

FIFA, as announced last Sunday through an official note, announced more provisions in relation to Russia. This Monday, the governing body and UEFA confirmed the suspension of football activity linked to the Russians. Thus, for example, the national team will no longer play against Poland in March in the playoffs for the Qatar 2022 World Cup Qualifiers. Consequently, the national team will not be in the tournament either, which will be between November and December of this year.

“Following initial decisions taken by the FIFA Council and the UEFA Executive Committee, decisions that provided for additional measures to be taken, FIFA and UEFA have today jointly decided that all Russian teams, whether they are national representative teams or club teams will be suspended from participating in FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice.

In this sense, the institution led by Gianni Infantino reiterated its rejection of the armed actions initiated by Russia and expresses its solidarity with the affected country. “Football is fully united here and in full solidarity with all affected people in Ukraine. Both presidents hope that the situation in Ukraine will improve significantly and quickly so that football can once again be a vector of unity and peace between people.”

In this way, FIFA aligned itself with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In the first instance, the entity recommended to the various sports federations to transfer or cancel any kind of official competitions scheduled in Russia and Belarus. That was the initial action against the military attack on Ukraine.

The IOC executive commission recommended this Monday not to invite Russians and Belarusians to sports competitions, after the Russian invasion in Ukraine. Noting that many athletes from Ukraine are prevented from competing due to the attack by Russian troops on their country, the IOC Executive Board “recommends international sports federations and organizers of sports events not to invite or allow the participation of athletes and official Russian and Belarusian representatives at international competitions”.
