It will be the first time that ‘Papá’, champion of the South American Cup in 2003 after a brilliant campaign, faces ‘Domino’ in an international event.

Cienciano will seek to accomplish the same feat that it achieved in the 2003 edition, when it lifted the South American Cup after beating River Plate and, a year later, beat Boca Juniors in the Cup Winners’ Cup, some milestones that made it the only Peruvian team in making international history.

For Melgar, this will be the sixth time he has participated in the South American, after finishing second in the group stage last season, when the club had a winning streak and achieved the record of being the first Peruvian team in achieve five consecutive victories in the continental tournament.

The red and black team, however, is not at its best, after falling last Friday 3-1 against UTC in the national league and seeing itself in the last places of the standings, while Cienciano is reinforced after beating Ayacucho FC and climb to the top of the classification.

The technical director of Melgar, the Argentine Néstor Lorenzo, acknowledged being “disappointed” for the last performance of his team and concerned about the results in the national league, but assured that he will seek to raise his cast to qualify in what he considers a “club priority”.

“It remains to work with everyone to overcome this moment and qualify in the South American, which is our primary objective”he declared.

Melgar and Cienciano qualified for the South American after finishing in fifth and sixth place in last year’s local tournament, although only the winner of the series will advance to the group stage.
