The Government’s position on Sporting Cristal vs. Flamengo tonight for Copa Libertadores

Lima, April 5, 2022Updated on 04/05/2022 07:51 am

Around midnight on Monday, April 4, President Pedro Castillo gave a message to the nation. In the midst of social protests throughout the country, the president announced as a measure that from 2 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5, mandatory social immobilization will come into effect in Metropolitan Lima and Callao.

In that context, all activities that are not “strictly essential” are prohibited. So, in such a category, sports come in, such as the Sporting Cristal vs. Flamengo scheduled for the night of Tuesday, April 5, in full social immobilization. The game corresponds to the first day of the 2022 edition of the Copa Libertadores.

Thus, and in the midst of doubts on the part of all citizens, the Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Félix Chero, gave an interview to Radio Exitosa to resolve some unknowns related to the provisions disclosed by the Government. In passing, he referred to the commitment between the ‘Celestes’ and the ‘Rubronegro’ for the continental contest.

“It will have to be rescheduled,” Chero stated forcefully in relation to the match between Sporting Cristal and Flamengo for the Copa Libertadores. “Let us not forget that in exceptional measures there are extraordinary actions that must be adopted. A football match cannot take precedence over the tranquility of the country”, declared the minister.

At the moment, none of those involved (Sporting Cristal, Flamengo and Conmebol) have officially ruled on the fate of the match that opens group H and that is also made up of Talleres de Córdoba in Argentina and the Catholic University of Chile.

The duel between the “brewers” and the “Mengao” was scheduled for this Tuesday, April 5, from 7:30 p.m. at the National Stadium. The Brazilian team arrived in the capital of Peru a few hours ago and even trained on Lima soil, but everything indicates that the game they had planned will not be played.
