The Argentine Professional League Cup has witnessed a curious event this Saturday, when the Unión de Santa Fe vs. Newell’s Old Boys, for the ninth day of Group A. Referee Fernando Rapallini ended the match a minute earlier than expected and had to interrupt the celebrations to resume it.

The match at the 15 de Abril Stadium took place normally and ‘Tatengue’ achieved an important victory at home, with a penalty goal by Gastón González (60′). Due to the partial result, the ‘Lepers’ advanced their lines and tried to reach a tie, taking advantage of the extension until 97′, by replacement of the judge.

Newell’s did not stop attacking, but there was no clarity and the sorrow for the defeat was evident in the squad, after Fernando Rapallini’s whistle. However, the technical command of Javier Esteban Sanguinetti noticed a remarkable detail: the duel had ended one minute early.

The claims began immediately and the central referee noticed the error a few seconds later. Given this circumstance, the experienced referee asked the players to remain on the field, in order to complete the remaining time. The substitutes, the press and the decorative inflatable had to be removed.

The Unión de Santa Fe players were not satisfied with the surprising decision change and also protested, but Fernando Rapallini quickly reassured them, pointing out that it was his mistake. Finally, with tempers under control, the ball rolled again and the last minute began to be played.

The outcome of the match was not modified and the fact did not have greater relevance, although there were still criticisms against the referee. After obtaining the three points, ‘Tatengue’ climbs to third place in Group A, adding 17 points and remaining one behind the leader Racing Club; while Newell’s remains in the fifth box, with 16 units.
