Champions League: the millions earned by the teams that compete for European glory | INFOGRAPHIC

This week the semifinals of the Champions League. There are four teams left to define the glory of Europe and each one has its arguments to conquer the ‘Orejona’. Real Madrid, Manchester City, Liverpool and Villarreal are the clubs that will define the title.

This Tuesday and Wednesday the first legs of the semifinals will be played with the duels between City-Real Madrid and Liverpool-Villarreal. But beyond sporting success, the Champions League also means sporting success.

Among the four teams that are in the semifinals, Liverpool is the one that has accumulated the most money in prize money for the continental tournament. This is because UEFA awards prizes in the group stage according to the results obtained.

In the group stage, each team receives 15.6 million euros for participating plus an additional for the results. UEFA pays 2.8 million for each win and 0.9 million for a draw. Liverpool managed to win all six games in the group stage, which is why it was the one that accumulated the most, along with Ajax and Bayern, which is why it reached 16.8 million in prize money.

Adding up all the prizes that have been distributed so far, the ‘Reds’ are the ones who have accumulated the most money with a total of 65 million euros, with which they have practically recovered the investment by Luis Díaz, for whom he paid 45 million at Porto, in addition to 15 million in variables.

The Real makes cash

In the other table of the semifinals there are two different faces. Manchester City and Real Madrid have won practically the same (62 and 59 million), but they are seen in a different way for their coffers.

As is known, City invest a lot in their signings and last season they hired Jack Grealish for 117 million. With his participation in the Champions League he has barely managed to earn half of what he spent on the steering wheel.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid has made money this year. He only paid 30 million for Eduardo Camavinga and by reaching the semifinals he has already managed to enter almost 60 million, that is, he ‘already paid’ for the signing of the Frenchman.

Thus, the Champions League grants sporting glory to the winner, but it is also celebrated in the offices, since the winner of the tournament can win 80 million euros plus what they manage to enter for the rights of the Market Pool, 300 million that the UEFA distributes among all the participants based on the television reach they generate. Needless to say, the box office and marketing profits are added to that.
