Karl Toko Ekambi assures that he suffered “insults touching the parents” from Lyon supporters

His confusion with the north turn of the Parc OL had completely eclipsed Lyon’s great success, on April 24 against Montpellier (5-2). After scoring the fourth goal in the 68th minute of play, Karl Toko Ekambi turned to the main group of supporters, glaring, one hand behind his ear and then a finger in front of his mouth. A provocation which was reminiscent of that of Marcelo in December 2019, or even Claudio Beauvue in January 2016. So hated from the north turn, the former striker from Guingamp had left the club, only six months after his arrival in Lyon .

The situation between Karl Toko Ekambi and the Bad Gones is a priori much less conflictual. For a week, we could therefore wonder: had the Cameroonian international only risen against the strike of encouragement established by the north turn, a week after his boycott of the match against Bordeaux, at the end of the European fiasco against West Ham?

“When the whole stadium insults you, it’s a bit complicated”

Again a scorer, Sunday evening in Marseille (0-3), the person concerned for the first time delivered his version at the microphone of Prime Video, after the meeting: “When the second period against Montpellier started, there were insults from the supporters. You could hear them clearly when there were corners. They were insults affecting the parents. I lost a close relative so it hurts. From our supporters, it hurts. An explanation that no Lyon player or manager had given, a week earlier, to justify Karl Toko Ekambi’s gesture, which had caused him to be booed by the north bend for each ball touched during the last 25 minutes of the match.

“When the whole stadium insults you, it’s a bit complicated. I did not answer, just with a gesture of the mouth, ”he assures, while a filmed sequence showed him throwing insults at the supporters. “But it’s behind me, we won tonight and I hope it will make the fans smile,” he concluded on the lawn of the Vélodrome. Not sure that the Lyon north bend also considers this episode as ancient history, on May 14 during the reception of FC Nantes.
