Serena Williams will play Wimbledon in search of the Grand Slam record

The 2022 tennis season is still underway and the women’s branch will have a big news in the coming weeks: Serena Williams confirmed her return to activity on the WTA and will participate in Wimbledon 2022 (June 27 to July 10), where she will look for a most Grand Slam title, to equal Margaret Court’s record (24 trophies).

The possible return of the renowned athlete had been speculated for a few days, although it was only confirmed this Tuesday. “It’s the date. See you there”, was the message that the American athlete published on Instagram, accompanying the text with an image of her on a grass court.

In this way, Serena Williams, at 40 years old, will compete at Wimbledon, which she has won seven times throughout her career (for the last time in 2016). However, the contest also means bitter memories for the current number 1,208 in the WTA ranking in recent times: she lost the 2018 finals (against Angelique Kerber) and 2019 (against Simona Halep).

In addition, the 23-time Grand Slam champion was last active in the aforementioned English tournament, almost a year ago. That June 29, 2021, the American had to withdraw in the first round, due to a foot injury, during the first set of the clash against the Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

After completing her recovery stage, Serena prepares her return to London’s Center Court, but first she will have to prepare in the best way. Precisely, the athlete will be present at the Eastbourne competition, in England, and she will participate in doubles, together with the Tunisian Ons Jabeur.

Serena Williams goes for the record

Serena Williams has had an outstanding career and holds 23 Grand Slam titles (seven Australian Open crowns, three at Roland Garros, seven at Wimbledon and six at the US Open), although she is still behind the historical record: the Australian Margaret Court won 24 trophies.
