Oblitas confessed his feelings about the fall in the playoff: “It hurt me more than the 4-0 with Chile”

The Peruvian team lost in the penalty shootout against Australia, in the playoff to Qatar 2022, and was left out of the World Cup. Juan Carlos Oblitas, sports director of the ‘Blanquirroja’, referred to what happened and confessed that this defeat caused him more pain than the thrashing suffered at the hands of Chile (4-0), which led to the elimination of the team in 1997, when He was a coach.

“Now I am in a moment of reflection. Normally I would have had to disappear from here for a few days. With the topic of Ricardo Gareca and other things, like preparing reports, I stayed”, were the first words of the leader at a press conference.

“I want people to understand that what happened hurts us a lot. It hurts me more than the 4-0 against Chile in 1997, when I was a coach. This time it hurt more”, said Oblitas, recalling that result that left Peru with no chance of qualifying for the 1998 World Cup in France (a draw was required).

In the same way, Juan Carlos Oblitas is optimistic about the future and sent a message to all the fans: “It’s time to get up. To all the people who write to me, I tell them that we are going to get up, because if we lower our arms or our heads, it will not happen”.
