Néstor Lorenzo and his analysis of his squad after winning the 2022 Opening Tournament with Melgar

Melgar lifted the prize for the Opening Tournament of League 1 2022 after a great campaign directed by Néstor Lorenzo. However, the Argentine coach will leave the Arequipa club after signing as the new technical director of the Colombian National Team and, after winning the first part of the Peruvian championship, gave statements in which he made a general analysis of the “rojinegro” job.

“The truth is that it is an extraordinary group, that was the secret of victory. This was the last of seven or eight finals that we had proposed two months ago. A very eventful match today, very difficult, but they are a very good team. It was difficult for us to endure the game with one less, but in the end I think the campaign was very good. Grateful to the players.” Lorenzo said for GOLPERU.

Regarding the game that was played this Sunday against Alianza Atlético de Sullana, Melgar’s coach considered that it was difficult to play after the incident with Adrián Fernández: “A lot of accidents happened. Alec Deneumostier is an extraordinary boy, he had to have that accident and he was expelled. Many warnings on the field that conditioned us, but congratulations to Sullana and congratulations to Huancayo who also had a great campaign”.

The Argentine DT is clear that overcoming the duel against Deportivo Cali for the Copa Sudamericana is the closest objective: “We are going to celebrate for a while today and start to rest, we have to prepare for Wednesday because it will be a very tough game. We couldn’t win it there and here in Arequipa we have that responsibility. We know that it is a tough team, with many top-class players”.

On his farewell to Melgar this Wednesday: “They are two situations that are things of life and football. I leave happy and proud, they have a spectacular and grateful mentality. Then I have a very difficult challenge, which I assume with great enthusiasm the Colombian National Team. I hope that things work out for me, as they did here that with time and with work the results will be given”.

On the other hand, at a press conference, Lorenzo maintained that he is proud of the group he is leaving in Arequipa: “The team since we took over last year has always shown an idea of being a protagonist, of wanting to reach these instances. Last year it did not happen, it cost us the coexistence of the two competitions. Today the team is more even, the boys have grown a lot, those who have trained in the lower divisions. It gives us satisfaction, the feeling of leaving a team with a replacement and a future”.
