Chilwell could miss the World Cup: he left on crutches after injuring himself in the last minute at Chelsea

The England team is getting ready for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, but the outlook is not favorable in the face of the call that coach Gareth Southgate will make. 17 days before the start of the competition, another member of the ‘Three Lions’ was injured: Ben Chilwell was seen on crutches after playing with Chelsea.

The 25-year-old left-back has been making his way back to the starting lineup with the ‘Blues’, following a serious knee problem that ruled him out of most of the 2021-22 season. During the last Wednesday, the footballer started against Dinamo Zagreb, on the last date of the Champions League group stage, and had to leave in an emergency.

The final seconds of the four minutes added by referee Francois Letexier at Stamford Bridge were in dispute and the unthinkable happened: Ben Chilwell grabbed his thigh, lay down on the grass and called for medical assistance. Despite receiving treatment from the doctors, the defender could no longer continue on the pitch.

At that time there were no further developments, but the scene caused great concern around the England team. Later, the unease increased: the former Leicester City player was unable to walk properly due to pain in his left leg and left the stadium on crutches.

Although the results of the medical studies have not yet been revealed, The Sun newspaper indicated that the diagnosis would be a hamstring injury, for which Chilwell would be ruled out of the Qatar 2022 World Cup. For now, Gareth Southgate awaits the official statement from Chelsea.

Chilwell’s Irregularity

Ben Chilwell appeared as one of the great promises for the England team, but physical problems have sidelined him in several games. In the Qualifiers, the winger only played five times (he scored one goal), while he was unable to participate in the UEFA Nations League (the team was relegated). The last time he played a game with the ‘Three Lions’ was on November 15, 2021, in a 10-0 win over San Marino, in the World Cup qualifying process.
