Guardiola surrenders to Piqué: “All the big clubs need those types of players”

Gerard Piqué announced to the world his retirement from football and the reactions were immediate. Pep Guardiola, manager of Manchester City, who had the opportunity to lead ‘Geri’ between 2009 and 2012 at the culé store, joined the signs of appreciation towards the FC Barcelona defender.

“It has been a surprise. It was an honor to be your coach”, Guardiola commented, in the run-up to the ‘Citizens’ match against Fulham, after being consulted about Piqué’s decision, with whom he celebrated fourteen titles when both coincided in the Barça team.

“He is a footballer who plays big games, all teams need this type of player. He is a happy man. His dream was to play for Barcelona and he fulfilled it, he explains in the video. In the important games, in the Champions League or the World Cup, in derbies against Real Madrid, against Espanyol, he has always been there”Pep added.

On the other hand, Guardiola predicted a good future for Piqué and highlighted his quality as a person. “The time comes for everyone but the future will be bright, he is a smart boy. He was in England when he was very young, then in Zaragoza and then he had an incredible career at Barcelona. I wish him well. He is an amazing human being, with a huge personality”he pointed.

Gerard Piqué, 35, will have the chance to play his last match at the Camp Nou this Saturday against Almería. The match that would mark his goodbye to professional activity, according to Xavi Hernández, would be against Osasuna next week.
