Ahead of the 22nd World Cup! After the traditional opening ceremony, which mixed political speeches, a mascot parade and a K-pop concert, Qatar lost 2-0 to Ecuador at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor in their first World Cup game. Here’s what to remember from Sunday, November 20th.
Pretty sober opening ceremony
In opening its World Cup, Qatar was much more sober and humble than many imagined. Fans present at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor saw the presentation of the trophy by Marcel Desailly and then watched a short film on the theme of the sea and dreams. Actor Morgan Freeman then spoke to a Qatari YouTuber to praise the accomplishments of the World Cup in Qatar.
Then talismans from different worlds, including the famous Footix of France 98, followed each other on stage to the tune of hymns such as Shakira’s “Waka-Waka” or Magic System’s “Magic in the Air”. South Korean BTS singer Jungkook also sang his new name “Dreamers” on stage with his dancers.
Then the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, delivered a speech at the opening of the competition, welcoming newcomers to his emirate.
Player: Enner Valencia impresses
After the festivities, Enner Valencia put on a show in the first game. The 33-year-old scored twice against Qatar. The Fenerbahçe striker is the manager of his choice, having scored the last five goals for Ecuador in the World Cup. A great feat for him, who made the best possible start to his qualification for this World Cup ahead of the clash between Senegal and the Netherlands on Sunday (17:00).
5 – Enner Valencia has scored all of Ecuador’s last 5 World Cup goals. Only Eusebio (Portugal, 1966), Paolo Rossi (Italy, 1982) and Oleg Salenko (Russia, 1994) have achieved more for their country (6 times in a row each). Significant.#World Cup2022 pic.twitter.com/kHhNUEAoE8

This is the first time in history that the host country has not won the opening match. A rather painful jump into the abyss for Qatar.
Suggestion: “We want beer!” »
The Ecuadorians who were present in the stands of the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor sent a message to FIFA: “We want beer, we want beer,” the fans chanted. Recall that despite the FIFA agreement, Qatar decided to ban the sale of alcohol near the enclosures.
