Cristiano Ronaldo had no contact at 1-0, confirms World Cup ball technology

The Portugal team defeated Uruguay 2-0, on the second date of Group H, and secured their place in the round of 16 of the Qatar 2022 World Cup. The two goals of the match were the work of Bruno Fernandes, but there were doubts about the first score, since Cristiano Ronaldo seemed to have slightly deflected the ball to inflate the nets.

Despite the questions about the play, FIFA determined that ‘CR7’ had no impact on the partial 1-0 and the conjecture was supported by Adidas this Tuesday. The renowned sports firm used the Connected Ball technology housed in Al Rihla, the official ball of the World Cup, to end the controversy.

After reading the information collected by the 500 Hz IMU sensor installed in the ball, the German company assured that Cristiano Ronaldo “definitely made no contact” in his attempt to define with a header in the match played at the Lusail Iconic Stadium.

Let’s remember that in that play, which occurred close to 54 minutes, Bruno Fernandes raised a cross from the left wing and ‘CR7’, at the height of the penalty mark, rose to head. The striker’s intervention made it difficult for goalkeeper Sergio Rochet to react, who was unable to save, and the celebration suggested that the goal was his.

The scene was captured by several cameras, from different angles, and in some photographs it seemed that the captain of the Portugal team had indeed deflected the ball to overcome the goalkeeper’s resistance. However, the Connected Ball technology put an end to the discussions.

When is Portugal vs. South Korea?

The match Portugal vs. South Korea, for the third date of Group H, will be played next Friday, December 2, at the Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan (10:00 am Peruvian time). The ‘Lusos’ have already secured their ticket to the round of 16 of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, but at least they will have to draw on this last day so as not to be in danger of being in second place.
