Kimberly García closes 2022 as a finalist in the World Athletic Athlete of the Year award

The Peruvian crowned this 2022 with her double world title underway at the Eugene World Cup, last July. She took gold in the 20km and 35km walk, a historic achievement for the sport. For the first time we were world champions in athletics and Kimberly did it twice.

On October 31, the voting to choose the nominees ended and it was the five athletes mentioned who went to the second phase, where members of World Athletics decided who would win the name of best athlete of the year.

And the winner was the 23-year-old athlete Sydney McLaughlin and they explain that it is because she won two gold medals at the Eugene World Cup (400 hurdles and 4x400m) and she broke the world record for the 400 meter hurdles on two occasions. (in the American championship and then in the World Cup). That allowed him to get the decoration from her.

Kimberly’s Story

“Winning two medals in a World Cup is not something that is assimilated just like that,” he told us the day after winning his second gold medal in Eugene. Surely now it was like a dream to be among the best in the world, it is that she is already part of that elite. She has earned it step by step.

Two gold medals in the World Athletics Championships, one bronze in the World Championships, Sports Laurels and among the best in the world, but above all, the affection of an entire country. It is what Kimberly García has earned. But this does not come from now, it is a long career -of march- that she has managed to maintain despite the difficulties.

In 2009, she began representing Peru and in 2010 she was already an Olympian at the Youth Olympic Games in Naijing, and she was a flag bearer. She then began her march around the world, being a World Cup champion from Beijing 2015 until her recent participation in Eugene, where she was filled with glory.

“I didn’t believe it; world champion. It is not easy to get there. She didn’t believe it, but as the days went by she was assimilating it better. And she would say “true, I am number one”. It was what I have longed for and now it has come true ”, she told us when she won her medals in Eugene in July. And yes, she is number one in the world march and now among the best of the year.
