Bono, the Moroccan hero: “In time, we will realize what we have achieved”

His name is Yassine Bounou, but the world knows him as Bono. The goalkeeper from Morocco shone this Tuesday against Spain and became the figure of his team to advance to the quarterfinals of the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Without a doubt, it will be an unforgettable day, although the goalkeeper declared that he will need “weather” to realize the magnitude of the feat.

Bono saved two penalties in the decisive shootout against Spain (3-0 for the Moroccans after a 0-0 draw), those taken by Carlos Soler and Sergio Busquets. Pablo Sarabia sent the goal post defended by the Sevilla goalkeeper.

“When you are in the moment you don’t realize what you just accomplished. We are very happy. Now we have to think about what lies ahead.”explained Bono at a press conference in Doha, after being chosen the best man of the match.

“We are happy that things have happened this way. In time, we will realize what we have achieved.”he pointed.

What is the secret to such a performance in a penalty shootout? For Bono, it takes “A bit of ‘feeling’ and luck. It is a matter of feeling, of sensations. There’s not much I can say at the moment. Penalties are like that”he pointed.

Shortly before, he had responded to a similar question on the beIN Sports television microphone: “You know the penalties, it is a matter of a bit of intuition and a bit of luck. We have won and that is the most important thing.”.

Bono also celebrated the great support received from the stands of the Education City Stadium in Doha, where the Moroccan fans were more numerous and were much more heard than the Spanish.

“We have felt the support and affection of all our fans, from Morocco or from any other country. This gives us strength to deploy this football. Thanks to all our colleagues. It has been a colossal effort. I applaud you for your work.”sentenced.
