Handball: PSG should continue their invincibility streak at Porto in the Champions League

This Wednesday, December 7, in the Champions League, PSG should be doing just fine. Undefeated in all competitions since 25 September and losing in Toulouse (37-25), a streak of 16 wins in 16 games, the Parisians travel to Porto (starts at 20:45, live on Eurosport). If Paris is gliding on a beautiful wave, then Porto is at the bottom. Once a serious candidate for folding seats, the club from the great Lusitanian city is gaining momentum in Europe this year.

Barring a miracle, he can no longer qualify for a place in the 1/8 finals. Let’s remember the rules again: the first two of the eight go straight to the quarterfinals (PSG, Veszprem this time), the next four will go to the 1/8 finals, and the last two will stop there, at the end of winter. After the first match, Zagreb and Porto remain two clubs in the basket. For the Portuguese, the situation seems hopeless: the club has already lost seven out of eight games and managed to draw only with Magdeburg. It is difficult to think in these conditions that this will put an end to the beautiful Parisian series.

Be careful, however, trust that nothing can happen. Porto, of course, has never won, but it hasn’t really lost either. To remember that they have to be careful, Luka Karabatic’s partners can remember that leaving a month ago was not easy with a narrow 32-30 win.

In any case, in Portugal, PSG have a double goal: to win, of course, to stay at the top of the group and to strengthen their big chances of reaching the quarter-finals directly. And then come back without injury. Because if the trip to Porto is not the most difficult of the season, then what happens next is impressive.

Before Christmas, PSG will face Cesson-Rennes (6th in the Starliga) this Saturday (18:15, the match was postponed due to the World Cup), and a week later they will face the Germans from Magdeburg. This match will undoubtedly be decisive in the race to reach the quarter-finals: the German champions are the team that can prevent Paris from finishing in the first pair. If successful, on December 14 (18:45 in Coubertin) the Champions League rollercoaster ticket will be almost in your pocket.

Next ? Paris will play the two toughest games of the season in the Star League in quick succession, with a trip to Montpellier on December 17, followed by another trip four days later to Nantes. The future champions of France are among these three teams, and every face-to-face duel is crucial. After all this, it’s time for international players to think about the World Cup, which will take place in January. Handball never stops.
