“With Dibu Martínez we work to the point of arrogance”

And not only in Argentina are they happy for what Dibu Martínez has been doing in the Qatar 2022 World Cup. The goalkeeper coach for Aston Villa, the club to which he belongs, also celebrates with him from a distance. Neil Cutler chatted with us about the good moment of the Argentine goalkeeper.

—Dibu Martínez was decisive on penalties. Did you always show courage in difficult times?

He is a great player with a great desire to win, he thrives on big moments.

—What job do you do at the club to be an elite goalkeeper?

He has a huge heart. We work very hard to prepare it for the World Cup, in every possible detail.

“Anything specific?”

The work we did with Emiliano was biomechanical, very detailed and specific to each game. He is relentless in his desire to improve in every way.

—Will your growth be enough for you to win the World Cup?

His improvement since joining Aston Villa has been enormous and that is testament to his desire to be the best. It’s the detail that he works on that makes him the best. He still has more improvements to come and he won’t stop until he is the best. We have a great relationship and that is key to helping him be the best. I know exactly how to get the best of him.

“How do you work with him?”

Working with ‘Dibu’ Martínez is easy because he is highly motivated to succeed. I pushed him and he pushed me.

—How would you describe the personality of Dibu Martínez?

He is a natural leader, he wants to help and bring out the best in people.

– Were you always a penalty shooter?

Technically he is very good because he covers both clubs with speed and power. Emi likes to decide the path she goes on.

—Teams always get stronger from back to front, can Argentina win the World Cup with ‘Dibu’ Martínez in goal?

Definitely. His desire to win is so great and he is such a great player that he will make sure they come home with that World Cup trophy. His country means everything to him.

—What other factor do you consider important to tell about the great moment of Martínez with Argentina?

Everything you’ve done in the game so far is for this moment. All the training, the hard work, the dedication. The desire to improve is to make sure that his country wins this World Cup. That’s it for him.

—Any anecdote with Dibu Martínez?

We always worked on him being confident to the point of arrogance. That’s when he’s at his best. Not arrogant, but approaching her.

—Did you speak to him after the match against the Netherlands?

No, we had a text conversation, but I let him enjoy the moment.
