Luka Modric was furious with referee Daniele Orsato after Croatia’s World Cup semi-final loss to Argentina, calling him a “disaster”.

Croatia were beaten 3–0 by South America, with Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez scoring twice and Lionel Messi scoring from the penalty spot.

Alvarez won that penalty in the 34th minute, a decision hotly debated by the crowd and Modric doesn’t believe his goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic made a mistake for the striker.

In fact, the veteran midfielder felt the referee’s overall performance was as poor as it gets, choosing to speak out against him when he normally wouldn’t.

Argentina deserved to win the match, they were better, they deserved to win, but these things have to be said, normally I don’t do them, but today they have to be done.

“I don’t like to talk about referees, but this is one of the worst,” Modric said of TyCSports. “I don’t have a good memory of him, he’s a disaster.

“It wasn’t a penalty for me. Still, I don’t want to distract from Argentina. The penalty killed us. We have to recover for third place and win this game.”

Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic echoed his captain’s thoughts, saying: “We lost on a penalty but it is what it is.” Both situations seem incredible to me, first he didn’t give a corner and then this.

“I never talk about the referees, they are capital mistakes and that cost us a defeat.”

Orsato is an experienced referee from Italy, with the 47-year-old in charge of the 2020 Champions League final, while Modric knew him from Real Madrid’s Champions League semi-finals last year.
