Cameroon: Goalkeeper Andre Onana announces his retirement from the national team

Surprise in Cameroon. At the age of just 26, goalkeeper Andre Onana announced his retirement from international career in a post on his social media. “I can proudly say that I have fulfilled my big dream […] but every story, no matter how beautiful, has an end. “, he said, before declaring his love for his country. “Players come and go, names are fleeting, but Cameroon is more important than any person or player. Cameroon is eternal.”

He did not justify his decision, preferring to say that he would continue to support his country: “I will always fight to raise my country as high as possible.” […] Now I will continue to follow and support my team from the outside. »

André Onana, who was present with the Indomitable Lions at their World Cup entry in Qatar on 24 November against Switzerland, was sacked from the national team on 28 November due to disagreements with his coach, Rigobert Song. The decision was made hours before Cameroon’s second match, a 3-3 draw against Serbia. Thus, it seems that this incident hastened his international resignation, even if he did not provide any details on the matter. This isn’t the first time he’s hit the headlines. In February 2021, he was suspended by UEFA for 12 months after testing positive for furosemide, a banned substance. He defended himself by summoning a medicine for his wife, taken by mistake.

Thus, André Onana left the national team at the age of 26 after 34 games for the Cameroonian colors. He was called up for the first time for a friendly match against France in May 2016, where the Blues won 3-2. His first selection dates back to September 6 of the same year with a 2-1 victory in a friendly match against Gabon. The culmination of his international career is the third place at CAN 2022, obtained by beating Burkina Faso on penalties thanks to his stoppage against Blaty Touré.
