Pep Guardiola has praised Jack Grealish and Rico Lewis after Manchester City’s victory over Leeds on Wednesday night.

City secured a 3–1 win at Elland Road in their first league game since the World Cup ended, with Erling Haaland scoring a second-half brace after Rodri scored just before half-time.

While Haaland’s two goals broke another Premier League record and deservedly made headlines, Guardiola was keen to highlight the performances of two different players.

Grealish played a mixed game, missing three big chances in the first half before setting up both Haaland attacks in the second half.

The England international has been widely criticized for his lack of goals and assists since joining the Citizens in a record-breaking transfer, but his manager was more than happy with his job against Leeds, although disappointed he couldn’t find his back. from the internet.

Grealish made two brilliant assists. If we can get the ball to Jack and Riyadh [Mahrez]it gives us the right pace,” the city boss told Amazon Prime.

“But of course we have to score goals. If the chances are there, it matters. It is a mental question.

“We know from training that he can shoot the ball into the net. Of course he is not a striker, but he has the quality to do that.

“All he has to do is say ‘I’m scoring’ – there is no negativity in his head. When that happens, he will score goals.

“He needs to be more ambitious, he needs to score more goals and be competitive.”

Guardiola also highlighted the role of 18-year-old right-back Lewis, who was a surprise starter despite both Kyle Walker and Joao Cancelo being available.

It was Lewis’ first Premier League start and he was hugely impressive as Leeds scored on his own and looked menacing after being sent off in the 68th minute.

Guardiola added: “Without Rico, what we’re doing would be impossible. He’s so smart defensively, he understands the game and he’s so smart.

“That’s why he helps us make our momentum so much better. He played really well. For us it is an absolute reality.

“Against Chelsea and Liverpool in the Carabao Cup and today at Elland Road, wow. Very, very well played.’
