He runs 365 marathons in 365 days in support of the fight against cancer.

Until the end, he did not let go of his crazy challenge and went to the end for a good cause. In the final hours of 2022, the Brit reached his crazy year-long goal of raising a million pounds to fight cancer by running 365 marathons in 365 days.

Gary McKee, 53, ran his 365th marathon of the year, 15,330km, on Saturday in winter rain, greeted by a small crowd of fans near his home. “Cancer affects everyone, so it’s not just a West Cumbrian problem, it’s a national problem,” he told the BBC before setting out on his final 42km this Saturday. We’re going to celebrate the day, have some laughs on the track and I can’t wait to finish.”

But this father-of-three living in Cleator Moor in the northwest of England didn’t reach his financial goal until a few hours later he reached a sum of one million pounds (1.13 million euros) in favor of the Macmillan Cancer Support Association. The counter went up again on Sunday. “WOW,” he tweeted Saturday night.

He already has many outstanding sporting tasks to his credit.

Gary McKee is not his first call for charity: he has already crossed Brazil on a bicycle, climbed Kilimanjaro, rowed distances equivalent to the English Channel. He ran 100 marathons in 100 days in 2017, then 110 in 110 days in 2021.

This year, he raised the bar significantly, requiring 22 pairs of sneakers. He was joined when he was running, often in the morning before working in the nuclear waste processing facility in the afternoon, by many anonymous people or even athletes such as English rugby coach Kevin Sinfield.

“The streets were full of people, it was raining, but everyone was clapping and shouting,” he welcomed the arrival of his 365th BBC marathon of the year. “I will always remember that.” He pointed out to the specialized site runnersworld.com that he was not interested in the possible homologation of his feat as a record: “It is not records that are important, but helping people.”
