Lloris on ‘Dibu’ Martínez: “Stupid things in the goal, I don’t know how to do it”

During the interview given to L’Equipe, Hugo Lloris not only spoke about his retirement from the France team; but, of the performance that Emiliano Martínez had in the goal of the Argentine team.

“There are things I don’t know how to do. Do stupid things in the goal, destabilize the opponent by playing on the limit, I don’t know how to do it. I am too rational and honest to go to that terrain, ”he stated.

“It is not easy to announce it, but after 14 years defending this shirt, which I have worn with great pleasure, with pride, duty and a sense of responsibility, I think I have reached the end,” said the 36-year-old Tottenham player, finalist for the Qatar-2022 World Cup three weeks ago.

International since 2008, Lloris received the captain’s armband when Laurent Blanc began his stage as coach, who replaced Raymond Domenech after the failure in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The current coach Didier Deschamps maintained full confidence in Lloris, key in the great period lived by Les Bleus, with the Euro Cup final in 2016, the world title in 2018 and a new planetary final in Doha in December, lost to Argentina in penalties (3-3, 4-2).

“We have to respect his decision even though he still had his place in our team as he showed in the last World Cup. A great server of the French team says goodbye and I want to celebrate his exceptional journey,” Deschamps said in a statement sent to the media.

After almost fifteen years in the national team -seven major tournaments-, “there comes a time when you have to know how to take over,” said Lloris.
