Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek is out for the rest of the season, Erik ten Hag has confirmed.

The Netherlands international suffered the injury in United’s 3-0 win over Bournemouth on January 3.

Although his season has come to an end, ten Hag initially feared the injury would sideline him even longer and believes he will be back once United begin pre-season in the summer.

“It’s his knee,” said Ten Hag. In the long run it looks very good and he will be back before the pre-season starts. He’s out for the rest of the season.”

Van de Beek has struggled to impress since his £35 million arrival from Ajax in 2020 with his start against Bournemouth, only his second in the league this season, with ten Hag extending his condolences to his compatriot.

“Everyone thinks about him. It’s terrible when you’re in a season and you get a bad tackle and a bad injury.

“It’s always very disappointing and the thoughts and feelings are with the player. That’s what you’re saying.

“We are now happy that his knee is doing well in the long run. At the same time, there are mixed feelings and disappointment that he is out this season.

“The players feel like we’re building something good and we want to be part of it and everyone wants to be part of it.”

United will meet neighbors Manchester City on Saturday in a huge derby, in which a victory would see them fall just one point behind the defending champions.

However, Diogo Dalot will be absent after stumbling off one shot in Tuesday’s win over Bournemouth. Anthony Martial is also doubtful after a leg injury.

“I think Diogo Dalot is not available and Anthony Martial trained this morning, so we will have to see how he recovers from that training and if he is available. We will make the decision tomorrow,” ten Hag said at a press conference on Friday.

“There’s something in his leg [with Martial] and if he’s not available tomorrow, it’s Wednesday [at Crystal Palace].’
