They take 15 points from Juventus in Serie A: what happened and what position is it in

Juventus was penalized with the withdrawal of 15 points in the championship by the Italian sports court due to accounting fraud in transfers of soccer players, the Italian Football Federation announced this Friday.

The Turin club had been acquitted along with ten other entities in the spring of 2022 but the federation’s court of appeal accepted the federal prosecutor’s demand to reopen the dossier due to the elements transmitted by the Italian justice that is also investigating the accounts of Juventus, according to a statement from the federation.

From being in the fourth box with 34 points, he must now compete in the championship with 22 points and in 10th place.

With the 15-point penalty for the Italian club, “to be met in the current season”, according to the terms of the statement, the instance has gone beyond the request of the prosecutor, who had requested a withdrawal of nine points.

The appeal court has also handed down significant suspensions for former leaders of the Turin club: two and a half years for former sports director Fabio Paratici, currently at Tottenham, and two years for former president Andrea Agnelli, who stepped down this week. The sanctions are stronger than those requested by the federal prosecutor Giuseppe Chine.

Juventus can appeal

Juventus has the possibility of appealing to the Italian Olympic Committee (Coni) this sanction that greatly compromises their chances of finishing in the top four of Serie A, synonymous with playing in the next Champions League.

Despite the fact that other clubs were also pointed out at the beginning, Juventus has been the main accused of having increased the sale price of several players to register capital gains that would allow their accounts to be validated.

Juventus is also being judicially investigated for possible accounting fraud to artificially limit their losses in the balance sheets presented to investors.

The Turin prosecutor’s office requested in early December the referral to trial of Andrea Agnelli and eleven other former leaders. This request must be examined at the end of March.

Andrea Agnelli announced her resignation at the end of November, under judicial pressure. His successor to the presidency, Gianluca Ferrero, was officially named on Wednesday.
