Thomas Tuchel has confirmed his intention to add Chelsea’s Anthony Barry to his Bayern Munich coaching staff after being unveiled as the Bundesliga giants’ new head coach.

The 49-year-old was confirmed as Julian Nagelsmann’s successor on Thursday night and will get to work immediately to ensure Bayern’s season ends in a big trophy.

Despite the concerns of the Bayern board over their current predecessor, the German Cup quarter-finals have put the club in a good position to defend the league title and face Manchester City in the European quarter-finals next month.

Tuchel worked with Barry during their time together in West London and will take steps this week to recruit the highly regarded manager.

Originally appointed by Frank Lampard, Barry was taken on by Todd Boehly and Graham Potter but has recently combined his work at Chelsea with a role for the Portugal national team.

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Tuchel said: “My coaching staff were not prepared either, so a big thank you to their families for being flexible.

“Arno Michels and Zsolt Low, who have been working with me for over a decade, will be there. We hope to add Anthony Barry, who currently plays at Chelsea.

Tuchel admitted he was a bit surprised by the timing of his appointment and admitted that, having been unemployed since September, he was waiting for his next job abroad.

“The timing was surprising, I didn’t expect it and there was no contact beforehand. I assumed I would continue my career abroad,” said Tuchel, who had been on Tottenham’s radar.

Tuesday evening was the first meeting. The magnitude of the challenge made me want to do it. I have been in close contact with Bayern before. But then I couldn’t wait. It would never be appropriate to pressure anyone. This time it was really fast, a great solution for me

As fate would have it, Tuchel’s first game will be against another of his former clubs, Borussia Dortmund.

Despite the lack of preparation time, Tuchel does not want to use that as an excuse. Indeed, his time at Chelsea has proven his ability to make an immediate impact, as his upcoming Champions League opponent Pep Guardiola knows all too well.

After being named Lampard’s replacement in January 2021, Tuchel won three games against City in a short period of time at the end of that season, including an FA Cup semi-final and a Champions League final in Porto.

“FC Bayern’s DNA is all about winning, including the way you play football. This team is one of the most talented and best teams in Europe,” said Tuchel. “I’m looking forward to working with this team. With this team you can fight for any title.
