Former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp says the north London club should sign Luka Modric this summer as they ‘need someone to lead the game for them’.

Spurs are without a permanent manager following the departure of Antonio Conte and have slipped from Champions League places through successive draws.

They were poor on Monday night as they drew 1-1 with Everton and failed to convert the lead with the Toffees reduced to 10 men.

A key problem, according to Redknapp, is the lack of a reassuring midfield presence to hold the ball and he believes Modric is the man to solve the problem.

The 37-year-old defender is out at the end of the season and could be a target for the club he left more than a decade ago.

“Tottenham need better recruitment, especially someone who can put their foot on the ball in midfield,” Redknapp told PA.

“If I were her, I would see Luka Modric when he leaves Real Madrid. It would take me two years.

“They need someone to lead the game for them and he does that with his qualities in midfield.

“Watch them at Everton on Monday. They go one for (against 10 men) but always give the ball away.”

Redknapp are not sure who the answer is to the search for a Tottenham manager and if Spurs can even get the man they want, while Chelsea are also looking for a new permanent boss.

“You are a bit confused. Not sure what will happen at Tottenham Hotspur this summer,” he said.

‘It looked like [Julian] Nagelsmann may go to Tottenham Hotspur, now Chelsea must count on him after a coach change. to boast [Mauricio Pochettino] would be a popular choice but could make Chelsea or Tottenham.

“Whoever comes has to get good players in the summer. It doesn’t matter how smart you are, you have to have good players.”
