Paul Scholes says he is a little worried about the prospect of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof embarking on Manchester United’s trip to Seville next week, while again criticizing Wout Weghorst.

The Red Devils looked in complete control of the Europa League quarter-final tie against Spain on Thursday night, with Marcel Sabitzer giving the hosts a two-goal lead at Old Trafford.

But United were beaten by two late own goals and are now 2-2 with Sevilla, while Erik ten Hag endured a squad nightmare after recovering from injuries to Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez – the latter looking particularly serious.

While Scholes is still confident United will have enough reserves to beat Sevilla in the second leg, a Maguire and Lindelof center back makes him a little nervous.

“I think if it’s Lindelof and Maguire I’m a little worried because they haven’t played any games,” he told BT Sport after the game.

“I think they will come through, I think they will do well, centre-back is a position where you tend to come through.

“I think everything will be fine for the future, Bruno Fernandes [who is suspended] is going to be a bust, but you have to keep in mind that Christian Eriksen is on his way back now, so he’s definitely starting, that’s the creativity of it.

“I think they can score goals there if Anthony Martial is fit and ready. Antony was on top again tonight. You can still go there and win, but you have to respect Sevilla for what they have done in European competition. I would say it’s a 50/50 game right now.”

He added: “I don’t think missing Marcus Rashford will be as serious as missing Martinez, Bruno and Varane.

“I think we saw Martial very sharply in that first half tonight. I think Antony looks better with every game he plays. I expect a little more from Jadon Sancho. But I think there is still potential to score in those first three.

Scholes also criticized Weghorst’s performance against Sevilla, with the Dutchman coming off the bench with half an hour to go.

A superb shot from Facundo Pellistri from the back-line sent the Uruguayan back into the penalty area where Weghorst picked him up, but the Burnley mercenary ignored both a quick shot and an early counter-attack on well-placed Anthony Elanga. before handing the ball back to Tyrell Malacia on the edge of the penalty area, who shot wide.

Scholes felt a more clinical attacker would have taken more of the chance, saying: “I think he should turn and shoot. When you look back at who’s on the edge of the box, Malacia, I don’t think he someone you think is going to score.

“I think a real striker, a striker with real quality [shoots]. If that’s a warrior, he puts it back and tries to score, or he turns and shoots quickly and scores. He’s five or six meters away!’
