Markarián chooses Fossati when asked which Uruguayan has the merits to lead his country’s team today: “I don’t see another”

Markarián welcomed the search for a coach like Bielsa, Olympic champion in 2004, among other merits. “I have enormous respect for him and his teams. I have always liked his paintings. There are two that I especially admire: Vélez de Bielsa, from 1998, was the best team in America, very pragmatic, even more pragmatic than what it proposes today, and the Argentine team, which was the best in the world for several years until the 2002 he had to lose ”. And he finished: “(His arrival of him) is a great success of the association; hierarchizes Uruguayan soccer”.

Asked if there was any Uruguayan card that could compete with Bielsa for the position from the curriculum and the conditions, Markarián was clear: “To have a coach with a track record, with assurances, to face a squad of as high a hierarchy as Uruguay has today, The one I know is out of the country…”. When asked by journalists about who that coach was, Markarián replied: “Jorge! (Fossati)”. He also mentioned Gerardo Pelusso, a former Alianza, although he clarified that he knew that Pelusso had already retired, so today only Fossati met those requirements in his opinion. “I don’t see another one,” he added.

As is known, Markarián worked with Fossati at the Uruguayan River Plate in 1993 for several months. After the offer that the “Wizard” had from the U of Peru, he left the post of the club to Fossati, who later -on his own- began a very important career. Today, 70-year-old Fossati leads Universitario, a club that he has kept undefeated since his arrival. The coach recounted in more than one interview that his first approach to Peru was through Markarián. “He sent me photos of what the U was like and I proposed to go if the option arose, I knew from him that it was a barbaric club. The chance to come was given but many years later, ”he concluded.
