Why does Andrada say that Monterrey is not a favorite to be the MX League champion?

The Argentine Esteban Andrada, goalkeeper for the Rayados del Monterrey, stated on Tuesday that despite the fact that his team finished in first place in the regular phase of the Clausura 2023 of Mexican soccer, he is not a favorite to be the champion.

“There is no use going out first. Now another tournament starts for everyone and whoever does things best will go through the series. We don’t consider ourselves favorites. We know that the Mexican teams are tough, especially in these instances in which you cannot be trusted at any time, ”he explained at a press conference.

Andrada, a Boca Juniors exporter, signed at the 2021 Apertura for Monterrey, with whom the furthest he has come in the local championship is a semifinal last tournament.

In this Clausura, the Rayados will debut in the final phase by visiting Santos Laguna this Wednesday in the first leg of the quarterfinals.

Monterrey, first in the table with 40 points, will have to overcome the lagoons, the dark horse of the tournament since the team led by the Uruguayan coach Pablo Repetto finished in 13th place among 18 teams in the regular phase and qualified for the play-off

In the playoffs, Santos, who had 19 points in the regular season, eliminated champions Tuzos del Pachuca, fifth in the Clausura standings.

“That (why 13 teams aspire to the title in Mexico) you have to ask the leaders. Personally most of the leagues I know, the first is the champion and raises the cup. We know that the championship is like that. We have to assimilate in the best way the points of difference that exist between us and Santos. The statistics are left aside”, sentenced Andrada.

The second leg of the quarterfinal series between Monterrey and Santos Laguna will be played this Saturday.
