Garcia’s own goal: Alianza loses 1-0 to Libertad for Copa Libertadores | VIDEO

Alianza Lima receives Libertad from Paraguay by the date 4 of the Libertadores Cup. After a corner kick in favor of the visiting team, the ball would hit Santiago García and determine the first goal for the ‘Gumarelos’.

Libertad de Paraguay beat Alianza Lima 1-2 on Tuesday and reached the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores, tying Atlético Mineiro on points and with only one less than the leader of Group G Paranaense.

The Paraguayan Apertura Tournament champion prevailed in Lima with an own goal by Santiago García at the end of the first half and a shot by Lorenzo Melgarejo after 56 minutes of the match, while Yordi Vilchez discounted after 93 minutes with a left-footed shot, in the fourth day of Group G of the continental tournament.

With this result, Libertad, led by Daniel Garnero, will visit Athletico Paranaense on June 6 where they will try to turn around the defeat of the previous date, while Alianza will receive Mineiro the same day with the same objective.

In the first minutes of the game, Alianza missed the first goal chance with a header from Paraguayan nationalized Peruvian Franco Zanellato, but he did not have an accurate definition.

In turn, Libertad reached the blue and white goal with a shot that goalkeeper Franco Saravia blocked, but that Carlos Zambrano had to take out from a second attempt by Gumarelo

Alianza and Libertad alternated attacking their respective areas with the expectation of opening the scoring as soon as possible, while the fans of the current Peruvian champion cheered in a packed stadium in the Matute neighborhood.

In a play that could have surprised the locals, Diego Gómez finished off the Lima goal, but it went wide.

Argentinian referee Fernando Rapallini penalized Argentinian defender Alexander Barboza de Libertad and took a free kick that Colombian striker Pablo Sabbag shot, but collided with the wall.

However, 46 minutes into the game, Santiago García scores into his own net as he tries to clear a Libertad corner kick and gives the Paraguayan champions the first goal.

Minutes later, the referee annulled a shot by Jesús Castillo, due to Sabbag’s advanced position, which could have equalized for Alianza in the first half.

Back on the field, Lorenzo Melgarejo scored the second for Libertad in the 56th minute, after Castillo fumbled and received a pass from a teammate.

Alianza’s defense showed weakness after Gumarelo’s second goal, which took control of the match.

With Hernán Barcos and Christian Cueva entering the field of play, Alianza tries to reach the Paraguayan field, but the shots go wide and nervousness is gaining on them.

However, Vilchez recovered a rebound and fired left-footed to score Alianza’s first in extra time.

In the first leg between the two teams, played last April, the current two-time Peruvian soccer champion, under the direction of Guillermo Salas, surprised Libertad at home, beating them 1-2, ending a historic streak 30 games without winning in the Copa Libertadores.
