Roland-Garros: Djokovic ‘constantly provokes our country’, expresses regret over Kosovo Tennis Federation

Kosovo, the heart of Serbia. Four words were enough to raise discontent against Novak Djokovic. The former world No. 1 and Roland Garros favorite used his victory in the first round of the Grand Slam tournament in Paris to express his support for Serbia amid rising tensions in the region.

“This is a very sensitive topic. As a Serb, I was very touched by what is happening in Kosovo and how our people are practically forced out of our municipalities (…). I am the son of a man born in Kosovo, and I feel an additional responsibility to support our people and all of Serbia, ”the man with 22 major titles justified himself at the post-match press conference.

Statements to which the President of the Tennis Federation of Kosovo responded to the microphone of France Inter: “We are deeply moved by the words of Novak Djokovic.” Jeton Haderjonay claims that “It’s not the first time Djokovic has done this”, in his words, a player who is “constantly provoking our country”.

Official request for sanctions

In 2008, when Kosovo declared its independence, a Serb had already recorded a message in which he called this independence “one of the most difficult in the history” of the country. “We are ready to protect what belongs to us,” the tennis player assured.

To put an end to the skirmish with the Serb on this issue, the head of the Kosovo federation requires a sanction. “We are going to formally ask Roland Garros as the organizer to establish a code of ethics in order to ask for the punishment of Djokovic,” he explained.

The French Tennis Federation has appealed on the issue of sanctions. “Let’s look and talk to him to find out what he really meant. No precipitation. We’re going to put things into perspective,” Tournament Director Amelie Mauresmo had already responded on Monday evening on French Twitch TV’s Côte Court.

In the absence of sanctions, Jaton Haderjonai has another solution: “If Kosovo is the heart of Serbia, as he writes, if I see it, I will invite him to play for Kosovo in the Davis Cup. »
