The world number one, Carlos Alcaraz, qualified this Friday for the third round of Wimbledon, where he will face the Chilean Nicolás Jarry (28th).

Alcaraz defeated Frenchman Alexandre Müller (84th) in his second round match, 6-4, 7-6 (7/2) and 6-3, while Jarry needed four sleeves to get rid of Australian Jason Kubler (77th), by 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 and 6-4.

“I am very very happy. It was my second match on this court (Central), where I lost last year (in the round of 16 against Jannik Sinner). I wanted to enjoy it and I have done it”, declared the 20-year-old Spaniard, one of the serious contenders for the title.

“I play very well on grass, I like it. I am gaining experience and every time I play better, ”she celebrated.

Before this Wimbledon, Alcaraz won the traditional Queen’s tournament, thus signing his greatest success on a surface that until now did not smile on him. That trophy, also in London, places him among the contenders to dethrone Novak Djokovic at the All England Club.

For his part, Nicolás Jarry reaches the third round of Wimbledon for the first time in his career. He is one win away from emulating the round of 16 he reached recently at Roland Garros.

Jarry is presented as an obstacle to be taken into consideration by Alcaraz, since he is performing at a high level in 2023, where he won two ATP titles, in March in Santiago and in May in Geneva, in both cases on clay.

The Chilean is also the South American tennis player with the best ranking still in the Wimbledon men’s draw, after the elimination on Thursday in the second round of Argentine Francisco Cerúndolo (19th).
