Deysi Cori and a new title: he faced 566 chess players from all over the world and won the “Queens’ Festival 2023″

Her CV weighs several tons: In August 2011, at the age of 18, she obtained the title of under-20 world chess champion. In June 2011, she had a rating of 2386 and was number 3 in Peru. She was first in the 2008 Pan American Sub 20 in Cali, first in the School Chess World Cup in Singapore Under 15 the same year and first in the La Roda International Tournament, in Spain (2009). But Deysi Cori is, above all, the only Female Grandmaster From Peru.

And with that title, even though he could just teach, he still listens. To learn.

His closest circle prompted him in recent months to continue competing outside. And here is a new triumph: the young Peruvian chess player Deysi Corti Tello imposed conditions and won first place at the “Queens’ Festival 2023″, where a total of 566 chess players representing four continents participated: 128 from Africa, 164 from America, 166 from Asia and 108 from Europe.

Brief prehistory: before her participation, Cori was on the point of not participating, despite the fact that days before she had registered. Since it was an online tournament, she needed to have a proper internet connection and get home early to get everything ready. Due to the congested vehicular traffic she arrived late at her home, she immediately went to her computer and could see that the competition had already started and that she was about to start the fourth round.

It hadn’t even started and everything was against it.

Even so, despite not having played the first three rounds, Deysi Cori achieved the feat of qualifying among the 25 places on the American continent to the next stage -and 100 in total, from other places on the planet-. The semifinal phase was held on July 15, after which 8 players qualified for the final stage held the following day, where they faced all against all (Round Robin system) whose final result threw the Peruvian Cori in first place with 6.1/2 points, out of a total of 7 points in dispute.

And one more title for his brilliant career.

The Women’s Online Chess Festival has been held annually since 2021. It is organized by the Women’s Chess Commission of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and aims to develop a strong global community of women chess players and to massify their participation in all areas of chess. With this triumph, the international GM Cori Tello obtained the right to be invited to the 45th World Chess Olympiad in 2024, which will be held in the city of Budapest, Hungary. Deysi Estela Cori Tello once again, she will make the flag of Peru wave in Europe because there she will be awarded as the winner of the “Queens’ Festival 2023 ″.

Now comes the other game: wait, talk, call on the support of some private companies that wish to be his sponsors to guarantee his participation in a series of important international tournaments -including the World Olympiad next year- with the aim of obtaining the only title he still needs to achieve, which is absolute International Grand Master.

While that happens, Deysi doesn’t stop. “I keep preparing, I keep studying, I keep believing in my country,” she tells me on WhatsApp, with the patience that others no longer have. The Peruvian chess player has been preparing to participate in the next Women’s World Cup to take place in the city of Baku, Azerbaijan from July 30 to August 24, 2023. This is one of the most prestigious tournaments of the FIDE competitions that is organized every 2 years and where the best chess players in the Women’s category and the best in the Men’s category meet. The amount of the accumulated economic prize is 2.5 million dollars, which is the highest amount in history under this type of competition.

And there will be the Peruvian Deysi Cori Tello.
