ESPN, STAR +, DAZN, Movistar Plus, FOX Sports 1 and FOX Sports Premium will broadcast the 2023 Belgian Grand Prix of the Formula 1 World Cup.

Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) celebrates his forty-second birthday, before Formula One goes on holiday until the end of August.

With the last race to go before the summer break, Verstappen, 25, leads the World Cup with 281 points; 110 more than his teammate, the Mexican Sergio Pérez, winner of the only two races that the Dutchman failed to score. And with 142 over the Asturian double world champion who, in a second youth about to turn 42 (he will celebrate it next Saturday), is the one who has come closest to the very dominant Red Bull during the first half of a season that it will close at the end of November in Abu Dhabi.

The Spaniard finished ninth on the track on the outskirts of the beautiful Hungarian capital, behind Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), not at all favored by his team’s strategy. Apparently in favor of his partner, the Monegasque Charles Leclerc.

The talented rider from Madrid had to cede fifth place in the World Championship to Russell, who improves him by three points (90-87). His partner, the seven-time English world champion Lewis Hamilton; who, after raising his own all-time record for pole positions to 104, finished fourth in Hungary, also occupies that position in the competition: six points behind Alonso.

Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) will start from pole position at the Belgian Formula 1 Grand Prix on Sunday, on the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, ahead of the Mexican Sergio Pérez (Red Bull).

Verstappen set the fastest time in qualifying on Friday but will start from sixth, having received a five-position penalty for having changed the gearbox above the quota allowed per season.

Last year and on the same track, the Dutchman starred in a great comeback, starting from 14th position due to a similar penalty, due to an engine change above the allowed quota and an unauthorized gearbox element.

“I know I’m going to lose grid positions but today it was all about feeling confident, we know the car is fast,” Verstappen said after qualifying. “Last year I had a bigger penalty (15 positions in total) and we still won the race, so that’s the goal.”

On a track that was drying up and under a finally blue sky after hours of heavy rain until a few minutes before qualifying, Hamilton achieved the fourth fastest time.

He will start 3rd, once the sanction has been applied to Verstappen, ahead of Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari. The McLarens of the Australian Oscar Piastri and the British Lando Norris, who were expected at the top after the great performance in the last two Grands Prix, will start 5th and 7th.

The Belgian Grand Prix, the 12th round of the season, is the third after Azerbaijan in April and Austria in early July to propose the sprint format, which modifies the normal course of the weekend.

The drivers only held a free practice session on Friday, followed by a first qualifying, which determined the starting grid for the Grand Prix on Sunday.

Saturday’s day is thus fully dedicated to sprinting: the riders will take to the track early (12:00 p.m. in Spain – 05:00 in Peru) for a second qualifying session, called the Sprint Shootout, with the same format as that of the Friday but shorter, which determines the starting order of the sprint race, scheduled at (4:30 p.m. in Spain – 9:30 a.m. in Peru).

If it doesn’t rain, in Spa-Francorchamps we will ride with tires from the range of intermediate compounds; with C2 —hard, recognizable by the white stripe—, C3 —medium, yellow stripe— and C4 —soft, red—.
