World Cup 2026 with 48 teams

The 2026 Soccer World Cup, organized by the United States, Mexico and Canada, expanded to 48 participating countries, will have a first phase with 12 groups of four teams each, announced Thursday FIFA, organizer of the tournament, which will go from 64 matches to 104.

This decision, “which limits the risk of arrangements and guarantees all teams to play at least three games”, will increase the number of matches in the tournament from 64 in recent editions to 104.

The direct qualifiers will begin from the round of 16, which will be accessed by the first two classifieds of each group and “the eight best third parties,” said FIFA, whose council is meeting in Kigali (Rwanda).

This format also means that the finalists and semifinalists will play a total of eight games, for the seven until the Qatar-2022 edition.

– Unusual formula –

Started in 2017, the move from the men’s World Cup from 32 to 48 participating countries forced a review of the format in force since France-1998, with a first phase of eight groups of four teams, the first two classified for the round of 16.

FIFA initially thought of a format with 16 groups of three teams each, with the top two qualifying for the round of 16, which would have increased the number of matches to 80.

But this formula, unusual in football, where it is usually played in groups of four participants in the main tournaments (European Cup and Champions League, for example), had an added difficulty: the risk of agreements between the teams before the third match, which led FIFA to think about the dispute of extensions and even penalty shootouts to avoid a tie as a result.

The highest soccer body definitely changed its mind after the experience of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where the last day of the first phase was full of emotion and suspense, particularly in Group E, in which each of the teams (Germany , Spain, Japan and Costa Rica) was virtually classified for the round of 16 throughout the 90 minutes.

This Tuesday, FIFA argued that it had taken into account “sporting integrity, the health of the players, the travel of the teams, the commercial and sporting appeal, as well as the experience of the teams and spectators” to renounce the three-team formula. per group.

The number of venues for the 2026 World Cup will double compared to Qatar-2022. From eight stadiums they will go to 16 distributed among the United States (Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, Boston, Philadelphia, Miami and New York), three in Mexico (Guadalajara, Mexico City and Monterrey ) and two in Canada (Toronto and Vancouver).

– Big income –

Aware that the wear and tear of footballers is a hot topic, FIFA kept the mandatory period that players have to be available to their teams at 56 days, “as in 2010, 2014 and 2018”, while the World Cup in Qatar It was reduced in a few days because it was played in the middle of the European season.

The duration of the North American World Cup is not confirmed, but the participants will meet with their teams on May 25 to prepare for a tournament whose final will be held on July 19, 2026.

The upcoming World Cup will break all business records for the Zurich-based organization, which then redistributes its income among its 211 federations. In mid-February, FIFA established its income for the 2023-2026 cycle at 11,000 million dollars (10,250 million euros), 44.7% more than in 2019-2022.

Its president Gianni Infantino will be re-elected on Thursday during this 73rd FIFA congress because he has no rival in the vote.
