The British Lando Norris (McLaren) completed the best time in the free practice day of the Formula 1 Netherlands Grand Prix, ahead of the local idol Max Verstappen (Red Bull), this Friday at the Zandvoort circuit (4,259 km) .

Against all odds, the current double world champion, the fastest in the first session, lost by 23 thousandths of a second to Norris, against an ‘orange army’ that set the mood in the stands of the atypical circuit located on the edge of the sea in the North.

However, the great dominator of Formula 1 remains the favorite for the remainder of the weekend, qualifying on Saturday and the race on Sunday, where he will seek a ninth consecutive victory that would allow him to match the record of the German Sebastian Vettel.

“We tried a number of things and the second test session was a bit more difficult, but I felt good, even in race simulation conditions,” he explained.

“The car has a lot of potential to perform for the rest of the weekend, we have to refine some settings but I am confident that I can be in front”, he added.

Although Red Bull continues to dominate, the first few laps around the Zandvoort track confirmed that McLaren is coming back strong, fifth in the constructors’ standings but second best team in the last four races.

“It was a good day and it ended very well in terms of qualifying. This morning we concentrated mostly on aerodynamics, which didn’t take a toll on pure performance. We found a good rhythm and a good balance for the car,” said Norris.
