“Reynoso covered our mouths with the draw”, but “against Brazil he has the obligation to try more”: Peru’s challenge and how to add to the score against Scratch | DT SURVEY

Opinions are divided after the debut. For this reason, at Deporte Total we consulted with six sports journalists to analyze with us the first match in the Qualifiers of the Reynoso era and what is to come: Neymar and the Brazilian megastars.

  1. How do you evaluate Peru’s performance and Reynoso’s strategy in the debut?
  2. What changes would you consider for the match against Brazil?
  3. How do you evaluate Paolo Guerrero’s performance?

Daniel Kanashiro – Direct TV

1.- If we see it from a result point of view, it will always be positive to add a visit, even more so when it is against a direct rival like Paraguay. In terms of the game, there is a trite phrase that little by little the team is going to have to adapt to the coach’s idea. In this case I think it’s the other way around.

2.- There will undoubtedly be changes, because you are a local and even though Brazil is not a good thermometer, because at home or visiting Brazil will always be a favorite, if it can serve to know to what extent we can make the home team feel in less complex matches. Afterwards, how it should be played and by whom, it is difficult to know because I still haven’t finished deciphering the Reynoso style.

3.-I had not appeared in the game until the shot hit the horizontal. I was watching the game with my friend and teammate Rodrigo Morales, who immediately yelled in my face: “I don’t do it for this type of thing.” you can leave outside. What a hierarchy!” and yes, you are right. Until you find a 9 that can untie a knot out of nowhere, Paolo is the owner of that number and that shirt.

1.- Reynoso’s strategy of going out to play against Paraguay with a 4-2-3-1 system was not bad; However, the poor performances of Tapia in the midfield position, Carrillo and Christofer Gonzales affected Peru’s performance in the first half. With the expulsion of Advíncula, the coach had to reorganize the match and Peru adapted by making changes to defend the tie.

2.- I think that for the second game some changes could be made. First of all, I would give Carrillo another chance, but depending on his performance I could consider the inclusion of Joao Grimaldo. I liked Abram as a center back, he could continue to be accompanied by Tapia like in the second half. In the midfield, he would opt for Cartagena and Castillo, instead of Gonzáles and would give Yotún a rest. I would keep Paolo Guerrero because of his experience and consider giving Carrillo the opportunity to play in the center instead of as a winger. Let’s remember that in Saudi Arabia he has generally been doing it behind the striker, as an inside player and rarely as a winger. My formation would be a 4-2-3-1: Gallese; Corzo, Tapia, Abram, Trauco; Castillo, Cartagena, Carrillo, Polo, López and Paolo.

3.- Paolo Guerrero, as always, stood out by retaining balls and giving the team a break. He needs to have high-level wingers to enable him; Otherwise, he becomes too isolated, since he is not the same Paolo as before. At the end of the game, he attempted a shot from outside the area that was close to becoming Peru’s goal, the ball hitting the crossbar. It could have been a Reynoso-style victory.

1.- Very discreet. From midfield forward there are no variations, no imbalance or forcefulness. If the back improved in the second half when Tapia played at Central, it doesn’t make me optimistic.

2.- Probably, in the absence of Advíncula, he will be forced to play in the background, just as he ended up against Paraguay. Five defenders, four midfielders and a striker.

3.- He showed his category with his shot to the post.

1.- In the playoffs what matters in the end are the points. With so many casualties in the eleven, Juan Reynoso could not be asked to play well, but rather the result and he achieved it. He personally left me speechless. He was one of the disbelievers. However, not only me, but He covered many of our mouths with this tie in Ciudad del Este. After the expulsion of Luis Advíncula, he made three changes at halftime and a tactical rethinking that gave him results. The sticks, the superb performance of Pedro Gallese and Renato Tapia, playing in a full-back position, were the highlight of Peru.

2. – Against Brazil, it is a match with a reserved forecast. The logical thing, based on names, is that they beat us in Lima, as has happened in the last two qualifying rounds. You can’t play Brazil at home with your goal in mind. Because at any moment the game is resolved. With the absence of Advíncula, Aldo Corzo should be the natural replacement on the right wing. He fought them all in Paraguay. Reynoso is going to implement very safely with a line of five at the back to ensure zero at least. Then, you have to play the Brazilian team at home as equals and in the midfield you need improvisation to take advantage of the few spaces they leave. I would like to see Piero Quispe on the field at some point in the game. He looks to be a figure in the national team.

3. -Paolo Guerrero, at 39 years old, is still an unbalanced player. If that shot went in that hit the upright, we would be talking about three heroic points. Against Paraguay we have achieved a starting point that allows us to dream that Peru can be among the six teams that will go to the 2026 World Cup directly.

Ricardo Montoya – Journalist Canal Liga 1

1.-Given so many casualties, Peru ended up lacking game, I want to think that Peru has lacked game, because we have had many absences. The game was a hallmark of the previous team, it is something that Peru was indebted to. Now, there are good things, such as the outstanding performance of Gallese and also the interesting rethinking of Reynoso, since Juan thought that what he initially proposed was going to work for him, clearly, it did not work for him, however, he was correcting it, to the point of the second time improves, despite the fact that they came, because Paraguay is local and we had one less, but in any case we will see how we play against Brazil, already forced as a local if we generate scoring chances, because against Paraguay we kick little on goal and we have to improve if we want to be competitive. Reynoso rethought the game well and had a good reading, tactically counterattacking to balance the game. The divisions and intensity were from Paraguay and that ended up overwhelming us.

2., given the material I have and for that I have to see how Callens, Zambrano or Lora are, to see if I can incorporate them into the team. Let those who are better play, because Paolo Guerrero made a great effort yesterday, will he be recovered by Tuesday? Taking into account his age we have to look carefully, I would like to see Grimaldo, I would like to see Peru that proposes a little more, I understand that we should not give ourselves away against Brazil and the point is important, but that Peru develops a little more.

3. – I think that Paolo made a great sacrifice, he fulfilled, he was not fed as much as he would have liked, he is clearly no longer the person he used to be, but he is still an interesting forward who stands out at any time and does wonders where the others do not. They do and with that shot he showed it, since it was a shot out of context and almost gave Peru the victory. Paolo Guerrero is capable of those things, but evidently he did an interesting job holding the Paraguayans back, however, he no longer has the displacement he had for many years. Guerrero is always a valuable footballer and did not receive a pass in a scoring position, but he still sacrificed himself for the team.

1.- Peru did not play well, but despite that, they reached a point, which will serve them well, since this result despite the losses and playing away, for me the result is valid. The rival had more possession of the ball, however, it was not a challenging opponent, if it had been Brazil or Argentina it would have been a total disaster and as it turned out the game would have ended in a rout. Peru retreated quite a bit and there was no connection between the players, since they did not give two passes in a row and the game became quite complicated. With 10 players after the expulsion of Advíncula. Reynoso read the changes well and with the entry of Cartagena, Corzo, López and with that he helped for the band and the absence of Advíncula was not felt as much. In addition, Tapia knew how to do the job of center back that perhaps the duo of Miguel Araujo and Abram did not work and it is an acceptable performance, but I did not agree because the rival caused us problems, since he lacked definition.

2.- Brazil is much more complicated for Peru, although we played in Lima, I think I would insist with Renato Tapia as center back next to Luis Abram and I think with Corzo and López on the wing. Later he would use a line of three with Yoshimar Yotún, Wilder Cartagena and Christofer Gonzáles. Forward, André Carrillo, Andy Polo and Paolo Guerrero at the top.

3. Paolo Guerrero gives you presence, although it is impossible to see the Paolo of a few years ago, he gives you hierarchy, leadership and experience. He is the player that the Peruvian team needs. I think that at the time of being so isolated, the team retreated and suffered a lot in the middle, they were alone and it made it difficult for them to get the ball and we didn’t see them in action as much. That clear play was going to be a great goal for Paolo. You have to find a teammate to help you and Paolo played a good game.
