The Ferraris of Carlos Sainz Jr and Charles Leclerc marked territory this Friday by setting the best times of the first two test sessions of the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix, well ahead of the Red Bull on the Marina Bay urban layout.

Under the high temperatures of the small Asian country, and with the drivers’ physique put to the test, Sainz surpassed Charles Leclerc, author of the best time in the first session, in the afternoon by 18 thousandths of a second.

“There is no need to get excited because I think our competitors have not yet shown their true pace,” Leclerc said.

Far from the fastest men of the day, the solid World Championship leader Max Verstappen (Red Bull) finished 8th in the second session, held at night, just like the race.

His Mexican teammate Sergio Pérez, winner of the race last year, was only seventh this Friday.

“We tried several different things in FP2 (the second session), some worked, some didn’t,” explained the reigning Dutch double world champion.

The day before, Verstappen, who is seeking an eleventh consecutive victory in F1 – his first in Singapore – had acknowledged that the RB19 might not be as competitive as on other circuits.

“We expected Ferrari to be good here, but we are too far away,” said ‘Checo’ Pérez.

Since the start of the season, Red Bull has won each of the 14 races, in the process recovering the record for consecutive victories for a team that MacLaren had held since 1988.

On Sunday, Red Bull (583 points overall) has a first opportunity to achieve a second consecutive title in the Constructors’ World Championship. But to achieve this, both drivers must finish in the first two places in the GP.

If Mercedes, second in the World Championship (273 points), does not score any points (or only one if Red Bull recovers the fastest lap point), the team will also be declared champion for the sixth time in its history.
