Three-game suspension for Real Madrid captain Nacho

The captain of Real Madrid, Nacho Fernández has been sanctioned with a three-match suspension for his harsh tackle on Girona player Cristian Portugués ‘Portu’ on Saturday in a match on matchday 8 of the league.

Nacho has been suspended for “playing a dangerous game causing damage that impairs the powers of the offended party,” the Competition Committee, the disciplinary body of the Spanish Federation (RFEF), stated this Tuesday in its resolution.

Nacho was sent off in stoppage time (90+4) of the match that Real Madrid won 3-0 in Girona for a harsh tackle on Portu above the ankle. The Girona player had to be taken off on a stretcher.

The referee initially cautioned Nacho with yellow, but after reviewing the play in the VAR he sent off the Real Madrid player.

Nacho later apologized publicly and privately for his entry.

“I want to apologize to Portu for an involuntary action in the game. Today and in my entire career I never had the intention of harming anyone. I hope you can recover well and quickly,” Nacho then published on his Instagram account.

“Nacho has apologized and they have accepted them. He doesn’t have to do more. As I said, it was a lack of lucidity. The issue ends there,” Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said on Monday, asked about the action of his player.

Portu suffered, as a consequence of the entry, bone edema in the tibial malleolus of the right ankle and a muscle tear in the left part of the buttock, Girona reported, specifying that “evolution will determine his availability.”
