Football: Algeria withdraws its candidacy for the CAN organization in 2025 and 2027

Algerian football leaders have opted for a radical change of course. Algeria has decided to withdraw its candidacy to host the 2025 and 2027 African Cup of Nations (CAN), the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) announced on Tuesday ahead of the selection of host countries.

According to the federation’s press release, the FAF has “formally sent a letter to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) informing it of its decision to withdraw Algeria’s candidacy to host the African Cup of Nations (CAN)” in 2025 and 2027.

In 2025, Algeria competed with Morocco, and Benin and Nigeria submitted a joint file. In 2027, it had to compete with Senegal and Botswana, as well as the joint candidacy of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

“This conclusion is motivated by the FAF’s new approach to the football development strategy in Algeria,” the federation further stated.

According to an FAF press release, which was published on the same day that new President Walid Sadi took office, the Algerian federation “will now focus its efforts on the reorganization and revival of football in Algeria, and will also reaffirm its unwavering commitment to the development of African football.”

The executive committee of CAF, Africa’s football body, will meet in Cairo on Wednesday ahead of a press conference by its president, South African Patrice Motsepe, during which the leader will announce the host countries for the 2025 and 2027 games.
