Conor Gallagher is confident he will sign a new contract with Chelsea after a ‘crazy’ summer that saw him close to leaving the west London club.

The Blues went on a spending spree again and broke the Premier League transfer record for the second time in a year by signing Moises Caicedo from Brighton for £115m.

With Enzo Fernandez having already signed for the club for £107m and Lesley Ugochukwu and Romeo Lavia having also signed, it looked like Gallagher was out of sorts at Stamford Bridge.

The 23-year-old has been linked with numerous Premier League clubs, from Tottenham to Everton, and is believed to have fetched around £40million for Chelsea.

But Mauricio Pochettino ultimately decided to forgo the academy and he has arguably been Chelsea’s standout player of the season so far, impressing hugely with his work rate and pressing.

There are only 18 months left on his current contract with the Blues, but Gallagher is close to signing a new contract and says the extra competition has ultimately made him a better player.

“I’m sure this will be resolved. Everyone knows that Chelsea is my club and I love playing for them.” “The fans are great and I love this moment and I’m sure everything will be fine,” said the midfielder.

On speculation surrounding his future in the summer window, he continued: “It’s been a crazy time in terms of what’s happening at Chelsea this summer.

“I spoke to the manager and he said he likes me as a player and I am in his plans and I am very happy with that.”

Asked if he feared for his place in the summer, Gallagher said: “Obviously I’d be lying if I said he didn’t.

“When top players come into your position, you think you have less chance to play as much as I would like.”

“It makes me even more determined to prove to the manager why you too are good enough to play.” I think I achieved that this season.

“There will always be competition. That’s part of working at a top club like Chelsea, one of the best clubs in the world for the past 20 or 25 years. So that’s what’s going to happen.

“In a way I was excited. But I had to make sure I was ready to show the manager that I was still good enough to play in this team.”
