Venezuela beat Chile 3-0 and added three golden points that fuel their dream of playing in a soccer World Cup for the first time in 2026.

Yeferson Soteldo scored the first in first-half stoppage time (45+1) and assisted spectacularly for Salomón Rondón, Vinotinto’s top scorer, who scored in the 72nd and then for Darwin Machís to close the account in the 79th.

The 41st goal suited Rondón, forward of the Argentine River Plate, who completed 100 games with the Venezuelan shirt in this match held in Maturín (Monagas, east).

The victory places Venezuela fourth in the table along with Brazil and Uruguay, with 7 points, behind the leader Argentina.

South America has six direct places for the 2026 World Cup, while the seventh placed team will play a playoff against a team from another continent.

“We have been doing things very well,” Soteldo celebrated at the end of the game. “When a family is united it is very difficult to hurt them. Keep believing, this is just beginning.”

Soteldo was one of the new additions to coach Fernando ‘Bocha’ Batista’s starting eleven, along with José ‘Brujo’ Martínez, who assisted the first goal.

It was a huge mistake by Paulo Díaz, who Martínez took advantage of and crossed for the Brazilian Santos striker, the protagonist of the match.

The 10 Vinotinto crossed the other goals from the left, with a speed that overwhelmed the defenders. First to Gary Medel to leave the ball served to Rondón, who barely had to push him with the boot; and then surpassing Felipe Loyola and from the baseline he put the center in for Machís, who finished off the right post.

Soteldo “played a great game and made things easier for all of our teammates,” said Machís.

“The unity of the group is fundamental, we are very united,” said Rondón for his part.

These points are worth gold. Chile is one of Venezuela’s direct rivals for the places in the middle of the table and playoffs.

La Vinotinto is going through a good moment in its qualifying round. On Thursday, he broke Brazil’s string of 15 home victories in qualifying matches, with a brilliant bicycle kick goal from winger Eduard Bello that sealed a 1-1 draw in Cuiabá five minutes from time.

“We’re just four games in,” Batista said without getting ahead of himself in celebrations. “Triumphs help consolidate ideas, but there is still a long way to go.”
